BMI View: We believe that the Philippines offers considerable opportunities: there is clear government support to grow the share that renewables take in electricity generation, and sectors such as wind have double-digit growth forecasts; admittedly from a small base. For the course of our 10 year forecast period,
we calculate that geothermal sources of energy will continue to dominate.

Following the launch of a Feed-in Tariff programme in 2012, investors in renewable energy have clearer guidelines as to the opportunities available in the Philippines. But some question marks still hang over the scheme, namely how these fees and tariffs will be collected and administrated. Another concern for potential investors is the current law surrounding foreign ownership of businesses in the Philippines. Under existing legislation, foreign firms are only permitted to take a 40% stake in a project, which is likely to deter some investors. However, despite these challenges we believe the renewables sector offers numerous opportunities for potential investors in this country.
